Broadway fans are thrilled as Audra McDonald takes on the role of Rose in the upcoming Gypsy revival. Known for her powerhouse voice, unparalleled emotional depth, and her record-breaking six Tony Awards, McDonald is set to bring new life to one of theater’s most iconic characters. Directed by the acclaimed George C. Wolfe, this production promises to offer a fresh, compelling interpretation of the musical—one that delves into the complexities of ambition, family, and the price of fame.
In the newly released trailer, McDonald’s rendition of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" hints at the intensity and depth she brings to the role. Her portrayal of Rose, a fierce stage mother who will stop at nothing to ensure her daughters’ success, reveals a blend of vulnerability and relentless drive. Audiences have high expectations for McDonald’s take, with many noting that her unique ability to capture complex, flawed characters may lead to one of the most memorable portrayals of Rose yet.
Joining McDonald is Tony Award-winning actor Danny Burstein, who will play Herbie, Rose’s romantic partner and manager. Burstein’s deep empathy and likable stage presence make him an ideal choice for this role, especially as Herbie often serves as the emotional counterpoint to Rose’s intense drive. Additionally, Joy Woods and Jordan Tyson will portray Rose’s daughters, Louise and June, respectively. Both young actresses will bring a vibrant energy and nuanced portrayal to these complex roles, capturing the tensions and bonds that arise from Rose’s unrelenting ambition.
The company will also include Lesli Margherita as Tessie Tura, Lili Thomas as Miss Mazeppa, Mylinda Hull as Miss Electra, Jacob Ming-Trent as Uncle Jocko, Kyleigh Denae Vickers as Baby Louise, Marley Lianne Gomes and Jade Smith as Baby June, and Kevin Csolak as Tulsa. The ensemble will feature Shanel Bailey, Jace Bently, Brandon Burks, Hunter Capellán, Tony d’Alelio, Summer Rae Daney, Kellie Jean Hoagland, Aliah James, Brittney Johnson, Zachary Daniel Jones, Ethan Joseph, Andrew Kober, Krystal Mackie, James McMenamin, Cole Newburg, Majo Rivero, Sally Shaw, Brendan Sheehan, Thomas Silcott, Jayden Theophile, and Jordan Wynn. Chowsie will be played by Tana June, with Indy serving as the role's understudy. Additional standby and understudy casting is to be announced.
Wolfe is directing the new revival of the Arthur Laurents-Stephen Sondheim-Jule Styne musical, which will feature choreography by Camille A. Brown. The creative team will also include music director and supervisor Andy Einhorn, scenic designer Santo Loquasto, costume designer Toni-Leslie James, lighting designers Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, sound designer Scott Lehrer, hair and wig designer Mia Neal, and makeup designer Michael Clifton. The production will also feature additional orchestrations and arrangements by Daryl Waters. Rick Steiger will be production stage manager.
With McDonald’s interpretation of Rose, Wolfe’s direction, and a talented supporting cast, this Gypsy revival is set to be one of the most memorable Broadway events of the year.
